Smart Energy Area: servizi all'avanguardia ed energia pulita
per i viaggiatori dell'ultimo miglio.

Applications

Light mobility for last-mile travel in urban and suburban areas

Value

Encourage sustainable mobility and improve the quality of last-mile travel for residents, commuters, workers and professionals.

Technology

Patented technologies for power management and electric vehicle charging

Problem

The last stretch of travel in urban and suburban areas, commonly referred to as the "last mile," is the most problematic part of the daily commute for commuters and professionals, especially in suburban areas.

However, to boost sustainable mobility and the adoption of public transport, it is necessary to make it increasingly efficient and attractive, overcoming the critical issues of traditional vehicle sharing services and electric vehicle charging infrastructure.

Solution

The goal of the Smart Energy Area project is to solve the problem of connecting diffuse and densely populated areas in urban and suburban areas. Three types of hubs have been developed, offering state-of-the-art services for last-mile mobility near railway stations and public transport network nodes in urban and suburban areas.

Each hub offers a rental service for light electric vehicles suitable for short trips, such as scooters, electric scooters, and e-bikes; private vehicles can be parked and recharged with clean energy; and, finally, groceries and fresh produce can be picked up through refrigerated lockers.

People can thus move quickly from one area of the city to another using public transportation, shared and/or owned light electric vehicles. Significant effort was put into the aesthetic design of each element in order to make the hub attractive and fully integrated into the urban landscape.

The project, carried out thanks to a grant from the Lombardy Region, was led by S&h (lead partner), Ferrovie Nord, Aerfrigor and the Milan Polytechnic.

S&h was responsible for the development and implementation of all electronic elements of the system, such as:

  • Rental system for electric bicycles, electric scooters and mopeds with dedicated stalls and lockers equipped with wireless charging system.
  • Locker for electric bicycle storage with integrated charging system.
  • Photovoltaic carport with storage system and charging stations for electric vehicles.
  • Charging stations with advertising system (multimedia totem).
  • System IT infrastructure for user access control, service payment, remote diagnostics and control, etc.

A SEA hub installed at Milan Bovisa station was the subject of an extensive 12-month test campaign open to users and commuters at the railway hub.
